Winter in the City: 10 au naturel beauty tips

A new season brings us us new fashion and makeup trends and new resolutions—it’s an exciting time, and a great opportunity to shed old habits and bring in the new! That being said, it’s also time to switch up our beauty routine to adapt to the cooler weather. Taking the right steps will ensure great skin all year round, and doing so with natural products will just make it that much better.

Follow these great natural skin care tips, and before you can say “two months of rainfall”, you’ll be radiating from the inside out and summer will be but a fond memory.

1. Skip the harsh chemicals and go organic

The best thing you can do is feed your skin with natural nutrients, not strip it with unnatural chemicals. Your skin—and overall health—will improve vastly if you do. Shop smart and read labels. Look to your local health food store for great toxin-free beauty products and supplements to get you started on the right path!

2. Moisturize Your Inside

Taking supplements like Omega 3 oils or Silica will moisturize your skin and organs from the inside out. You can also incorporate oils into your everyday cooking by using uber-healthy oils such as flax seed oil or organic cold-pressed coconut oil. You can also use this as a hair mask and night-moisturizer too, so it’s multi-purpose!

3. Clean with Green

Cleaning your skin doesn’t have to mean striping the natural oils from it. In fact, your skin produces oil because it senses it’s needed, so try and keep the PH intact by using natural products as much as possible. We recommend: BELMONDO Gentle Invigorating Skin Cleanser. Plus: this cleanser also aids in the exfoliation of dead skin cells.

4. Exfoliate and re-balance

Dead skin cells not only block your pores, but also lead to a dull-looking complexion and can prevent your moisturizer from really sinking into your skin. After cleansing and exfoliating, you will want to calm your skin and re-balance the PH levels by using toner. We recommend: BELMONDO Gentle Face Exfoliant and BELMONDO Calming Soothing Facial Toner. And don’t forget to exfoliate your lips!

5. Moisturize your skin daily and reverse sun damage

Using an oil-based moisturizer will kick up the moisture content of your skin in drier weather, and sunscreen is equally as important as it was when the sun was out full-force, if not more so: UV Rays can travel through clouds, so don’t take the overcast skies as a sign to skip the sunscreen! We recommend ARBONNE’s Brightening Moisture Face Cream with SPF 30, which moisturizes, protects, and reverses sun damage all in one.

6. Lip service:

Lips are extremely sensitive to weather change, so they need some extra TLC. We recommend: BELMONDO’s “The Balm” Healing Nourishing Lip Balm. It smells like Chai, is made with Pure Olive Oil, and melts into your lips on contact. The best thing about this product is the high-shine factor; it makes a perfect lip-gloss too! (and everyone loves easy-chic).

7. Weekly masks (for hair and skin!)

Pure cold-pressed coconut oil is an amazing product for your skin & hair, one of the healthiest and most effective.

For face: Mash a ripe avocado and mix with 1 tbsp each honey and coconut oil, apply to face and leave on for 10 minutes before bedtime.
For hair: Saturate the ends of your strands with coconut oil and wrap in a moist, warm towel for 20 minutes (a towel can be heated in the microwave when damp, but not too hot!) and voilà: an all-natural hot oil treatment and face mask! (Extra tip: organic cold-pressed coconut oil is the best.)

8. Use a gentle foundation

For skin-loving foundation, I always turn to Sappho. In an aloe vera base, using essential oils as preservatives, this foundation is packed with skin-nourishing ingredients, and looks dewy on, so you can keep that summer ‘glow’ well through the darker months.

9. Be gentle to your hair

Your hair is just as sensitive to weather as your skin (as we all know…), so ditch your shampoos with sulfates in them, and go for a products that works with your hair’s oils, not against them. Our favourite shampoo/conditioner duo of the moment is ARBONNE FC5 Daily Nourishing Daily Shampoo and Conditioner; it’s all the nourishment, without all the build-up. Your hair will never look, feel, or smell better!

10. Warm up

Don’t just cope with the weather, take a break from it! A change of environment is not only good for the soul, but your skin, too, so hit your local steam room, or incorporate a humidifier into your home. You will feel a world of difference in your overall well-being; and of course, in the moisture content of your skin.

A bit about these products:

ARBONNE International was developed in Switzerland in 1975 by Petter Mørck and a group of leading biochemists, biologists, and herbalists that developed skin care products based on botanical principles. After the 1980s the product line grew to include not only beauty products for skin care, but also anti-aging and weight loss products. These are Swiss-born formulas, now made in the United States and sold internationally. Arbonne’s popularity has continued to grow rapidly, and is now considered to be one of the most popular botanical cosmetics companies in the world.

BELMONDO skin care was developed 2 years ago by local Italian-Vancouverite and esthetician Daniela Belmondo. She’s formulated an organic olive oil-based skin care line, that protects, nourishes, and enhances natural beauty with all-natural ingredients; sourced fair-trade whenever possible, and never tested on animals. Belmondo is manufactured right here in Vancouver in small batches, but don’t be fooled—many local shops have already picked up this fast-growing line.
